Was he the Worlds Greatest Overland Explorer or the Biggest Liar?Perhaps no land journey in human history is more famous than Marco Polos legendary 24-year trek across Asia. But was it all just a big lie? As described in his 1299 book, The Description of the World, the peripatetic Venetian merchant encountered such wonders as the singing sand dunes of Dunhuang, China, mountains of salt in present-day Afghanistan, and the glories of the Mongol court of Kublai Khan. Generations of Europeans were spellbound by Polos account, yet in recent years some scholars have questioned its authenticity. For an extensive three part series in National Geographic, veteran photographer Michael Yamashita put the famed Venetians reputation to the ultimate test using Polos own book as his travel guide for a journey in the celebrated explorers footsteps.Yamashita retraced Polos route across ten countries, from Venice through restricted areas in Iraq and war zones in Afghanistan, over the old Silk Road into China and back again by way of Southeast Asia and India. Along the way he encountered many landmarks and peoples documented in Polos book, deepening his conviction that Polos account is indeed authentic. Yamashita shares dazzling images and fascinating stories from his own journey to the East, while making a strong, personal case for the veracity of the reports of his 13th-century predecessor. Yamashitas search for Marco Polo led to this series of documentary films that first aired on the National Geographic Channel Asia. Three 30-minute episodes, shot on 16 mm film. Initial airing: March 2004, National Geographic Channel Asia. Asian TV Awards: Best Cinematography, Best Original Music Score

5 Dead in Explosion At Power Plant In Middletown, Connecticut’Many casualties’ in US power plant explosionJames Bone in New York Dozens were feared injured or dead in a massive explosion at a new power plant in Connecticut today that shook nearby towns like an earthquake. The Kleen Energy Plant, being built in the college town of Middletown, is reported to have blown up during the first test of its natural gas-fired generating system.Flames were seen shooting from a pipeline as a fireball lit up the sky and a huge plume of smoke hung over the scene.Officer Kevin White of the Middletown police said there were mass casualties. Rescue personnel said that at least two people were confirmed dead and 100 feared injured. There are bodies everywhere, a witness told the Hartford Courant newspaper.A fire brigade official said that 51 construction workers were believed to be on the site at the time of explosion at 11:17 am local time.Victims were feared to have been buried in the rubble when the rear of the largest building on the site collapsed.A woman identifying herself only as Kathi wrote on the website of the local Middletown Press: My husband is on that job site and was on that crew till last week. Thankfully he was home. Both his brothers were there and are OK. We know of at least three dead so far.The 620-megawatt power plant,on the bank of the Connecticut River about two miles from Middletowns city centre, was due to go online this summer.Kleen Energy Systems received approval to generate 520 megawatts — enough electricity for 364,000 to 520,000 households — in November 2002. In 2006, the company sought approval from the Connecticut Siting Council to be able to produce 620 megawatts, enough for 434,000 to 620,000 homes.Gerald Daley, a member of the Middletown Common Council, said it was the first day that the gas-fired power plant was being tested.I heard the explosion, he said. It shook our house. Al Santostefano, the deputy fire marshal, said the explosion was related in some way to natural gas but that the precise cause remained under investigation. He told reporters that the blast appeared to haveoccurred when operators attempted a blow down of natural gas pipelines to clear the gas.It was a massive explosion, he said. Its possible that there might be people trapped in the rubble. There was a lot of steel, from what I could see.Bernadette Nyland, who was playing outside with her dogs when she heard the explosion, told WTNH television: They were doing the firing of the engines this morning and so something went wrong and it blew up and flames came shooting up almost as tall as that stack.Residents of towns as far away as East Haven, 30 miles from the plant, reported feeling a blast.I felt the ground shake and thought a tree had fallen nearby, said Ethan Goller, who was working in his garage in Ivoryton, 20 miles from Middletown.Parishioners at the nearby East Hampton church interrupted their Sunday service fearing an earthquake.Darren Kramer of local News Channel 8 television said on Twitter that he was outside in North Guilford when he heard the explosion. Sound was huge and low. Lasted several seconds. Assumed sonic boom.A woman named Jennifer said via Twitter, First thought was earthquake or huge gust of wind — whole house shook, very brief but powerful More than 100 firemen rushed to the fire along with scores of ambulances and several helicopters. At least seven ambulances were seen leaving the plant without their sirens on – possibly transporting bodies. The Red Cross was setting up a counselling centre for victims families in the council chambers at Middletown City Hall.

Neda-The Angel of Iran: To the Brave Women of Iran

Neda means the Voice. The cowards of the Basij wanted to silence her voice. Those still living must keep her voice going…be tarafe azadi’Neda, don’t go’Her parents and others told her it would be dangerous to go to Saturday’s march, said Golshad. On Friday, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had warned in his weekly sermon that demonstrators would be responsible for any violence that broke out. Even Golshad stayed away. At 3:30 p.m., the two friends spoke."I told her, ‘Neda, don’t go,’ " she recalled, heaving with sobs. But Agha-Soltan was as stubborn as she was honest, Golshad said."She said, ‘Don’t worry. It’s just one bullet and its over.’ " Her friends say she, Panahi and two others were stuck in traffic on Karegar Street, east of Tehran’s Azadi (Freedom) Square, on their way to the demonstration sometime after 6:30 p.m.After they stepped out of the car to get some fresh air and crane their necks over the jumble of cars, Panahi heard a crack from the distance. In the blink of an eye, he realized Agha-Soltan had collapsed to the ground."We were stuck in traffic and we got out and stood to watch, and without her throwing a rock or anything they shot her," he said. "It was just one bullet."Blood poured from the right side of her chest and began bubbling out of her mouth and nose as her lungs filled up."I’m burning, I’m burning!" Panahi recalled her saying, her final words. Those nearby gathered around. A doctor tried to help, Panahi said, telling him to put his palm over the wound and apply pressure. A driver coming from the other direction urged the crowd to put her into his car.A frantic search for a hospital followed. They took a wrong turn down a dead end and switched her limp body to another car.Along the way, protesters and others screamed at drivers to clear a path in the snarled traffic. The medical staff of Shariati Hospital made a heroic effort to rush her into surgery, but it was too late. She was dead by the time she arrived at the emergency room, Panahi said."This is a crime that’s not in support of the government," he said. "This is a crime against humanity."LA TimesYou who wronged a simple woman*Bursting into laughter at the crime, And kept a pack of fools around you To mix good and evil, to blur the line, Though everyone bowed down before you, Saying virtue and wisdom lit your way, Striking gold medals in your honor, Glad to have survived another day, Do not feel safe. The poet remembers. You can kill one, but another is born. The words are written down, the deed, the date. And youd have done better with a winter dawn, A rope, and a branch bowed beneath your weight. by Czeslaw Milosz
